Nanoradio's Always On WiFi Introduced Inside 3G UMA Phone

Nanoradio has announced that its Always On WiFi (News - Alert) solution has been commercially launched inside the world's first unlicensed mobile access (3G UMA) phone. Recently, this solution was also introduced in a 2.5G UMA phone.

 
The P270 is reportedly the first device that combines UMA and 3G network technology, while P250 is 2.5G UMA phone. Both these phones are expected to be realised by Samsung (News - Alert) in multiple countries of Europe.
 
UMA extends mobile services voice, data and IP multimedia subsystem/session initiation protocol (IMS/SIP) applications over IP access networks. The UMA phone requires the Wi-Fi to be active all time in order to receive an incoming or making an outgoing UMA call, said company officials.
 
Also, low power consuming WiFi solutions are a critical technology for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) using dual mode cellular/WiFi handsets applications.
 
A NRX700/2 WiFi chipset, the Always On WiFi solution from Nanoradio offers fully tested 802.11b/g functionality. The functionality features ultra-low power consumption enabling UMA standby time and UMA talk time.
 
Unlike standard UMA phone offerings, the Nanoradio WiFi solution is doubling the standby and talk time. Officials said that this results in that the UMA phone customer can adopt behaviour of keeping the WiFi Always On. Also, there is no need for a “turn on and off the WiFi behavior” to save battery time.
 
“We are very proud to have launched our WiFi product with a Tier 1 phone manufacturer and a Tier 1 operator, in an environment with extreme requirements on power consumption, stability and output power,” said Tord Wingren, CEO and president at Nanoradio.
 
He added that his company is confident that this experience, in combination with the best in class, size, and price will be very competitive in other mobile phone applications using WiFi.
 
Kista, Sweden-based Nanoradio designs semiconductors with wireless capability for the cellular and handheld market. Nanoradio has developed integrated circuits which bring WLAN capabilities into mobile phones and consumer multimedia electronics.
 
Officials said that their WiFi chips target a range of applications, including mobile phones, wireless network cameras for home surveillance, portable media players and gaming devices.
 
Earlier this year, Nanoradio announced that it had signed a partnership deal with Samsung Electro-Mechanics to provide WLAN modules to the wireless mobile industry.
