Perlego's SaaS Solution for Mobile Device Management Now Supports BlackBerry Smartphones

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

In a move that targets an increasingly mobile workforce, a Gig Harbor, Washington-based company announced today that one of its flagship device management systems now supports Research In Motion’s BlackBerry (News - Alert) smartphones.

Officials at Perlego Systems, Inc. say their so-called “Horizons” multi-platform, carrier-neutral solution will allow customers to manage devices such as the BlackBerry Pearl, Curve, Bold and Storm (pictured below) from a single administrative console.

According to Todd Ostrander, chief executive officer of Perlego, the company is dedicated to helping customers manage all of their mobile devices in a single system, regardless of the number of carriers they use or platforms they have in service.

“This product release is an important milestone for our business, and we look forward to the expanded opportunities it brings,” Ostrander said. “We’re encouraged by the feedback of partners and customers that participated in the beta release, and look forward to addressing the larger needs of the market.”

Specifically, Horizons is designed to help enterprises, distributors, carriers and VARs manage deployed smart wireless devices by leveraging a software-as-a-service architecture and over-the-air technology, Horizons is designed to help administrators perform critical mobile device management and data assurance processes, without negatively impacting IT department resources or worker productivity.

Today’s announcement about supporting BlackBerry devices comes on the heels of a report from RIM that the Waterloo, Ontario-based company is cutting its quarterly profit estimates for the quarter that ended Nov. 29 from a range of about $2.95 billion to $3.1 billion down to $2.75 billion.

Even so, in September of this year, RIM announced the number of BlackBerry subscribers had reached approximately 19 million. This equated to 53.6 percent of the U.S. market for smart phones in the second quarter of 2008, Perlego says.

Officials at the company say that with Horizons, administrators can perform management functions over-the-air, including: backing up and restoring data on a device; disabling a lost or stolen device; issuing software updates and patches; configuring device and user settings; and tracking and inventorying all their smart devices.

BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (BlackBerry MVS) BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (BlackBerry MVS) converges office desk phones and BlackBerry® smartphones, allowing users to access standard enterprise voice features whether at their desks or on the go*. BlackBerry MVS encompasses BlackBerry® MVS Client software for BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry MVS Services of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, and the Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite.

With BlackBerry MVS, BlackBerry smartphone users can access enterprise desk phone options directly from the menu interface of the BlackBerry phone application, while at the same time securely authenticating to the organization’s enterprise telephony system (PBX). BlackBerry MVS also gives IT administrators the control to set voice policies on the BlackBerry smartphone, so that inbound and outbound calls use the enterprise line. This allows for all mobile calls to be logged or recorded for compliance with regulatory or corporate standards.
