October 23, 2008

Motorola (News - Alert) is now offering its NBBS Device Management System, designed to help providers roll out personal media experiences along with new services without adding to their operational costs.

Motorola NBBS is a scaleable, carrier-grade software platform that allows operators to remotely access, configure, monitor and troubleshoot a complete portfolio of consumer devices, home networks and services. This includes gateways, modems, Webcams and IP set-tops. The platform helps carriers boost revenue quickly by reducing time to market for new services.

“Today’s technology consumers are increasingly in need of experiences that are seamless and hassle free,” said Matt Healey, research manager at IDC’s (News - Alert) software and hardware support services division, in a statement. “Adding remote management and support capabilities to growing technologies like IPTV (News - Alert) help operators focus on the end-user experience, which is critical to ensuring customer satisfaction.”

The market for clientless remote support services tools is expected to grow worldwide at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.6 percent, according to IDC forecasts.

Motorola’s VIP set-top platform includes a line of all-IP or hybrid high definition (HD) and standard definition set-tops along with digital video recorders. With these, it is possible to offer several program options besides interactivity features and video on demand for TV viewers. The VIP set-tops offer support to home networking interfaces and KreaTV application development environment. This enables features like NBBS, advanced interactive applications and third-party middleware solutions.

NBBS allows automation of provisioning and management processes for several devices with easy installation procedures. This helps avoid errors and thereby minimizes customer frustration. It provides ongoing management and support for its IP customer premises equipment (CPE). NBBS offers network flexibility to network operators enabling support teams to correct technical snags besides providing tools for managing all subscribers and system-wide campaigns.

Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager at Motorola’s broadband solutions group, noted that Motorola introduced NBBS platform to its IP services suite in order to provide operator customers with more value in the form of built-in installation and troubleshooting capabilities. The flexibility of the VIP platform with integrated remote device management enables operators to increase their efficiency and revenue. It also offers consumers a seamless, hands-off role in enabling their video and interactive experiences.

The NBBS platform offers support to different protocols like TR-069, telnet and HTTP management interfaces for seamless integration into service providers’ networks. It facilitates provisioning, billing and customer support across multi-vendor customer premises equipment (CPE) and is compatible with both WiMAX (News - Alert) and femtocell devices.
