Important Lessons Can be Learned from Allot
February 22, 2012

According to Allot’s most recent report, the usage of mobile bandwidth grew by 83 percent during the second half of last year (H2). Allot (News - Alert) is a company that specializes in using data from mobile bandwidth to predict trends and generate revenue for clients in the mobile and fixed broadband industry. Among the services that Allot provides is NetXplorer which enables customers to track mobile bandwidth for themselves. Using the same technology as NetXplorer, Allot presents the research entitled “H2, 2011 Allot Mobile Trends Report.”

Allot demonstrates through this report how the data collected from bandwidth can supply businesses with information that is critical for mapping out upcoming moves. And since dramatic increases can occur within a relatively short amount of time, it may be in the client’s best interest to own bandwidth-tracking software, so that they can run reports at whatever time is most crucial for them.

Allot indicates that the following statistics are of the most significance:

  • Mobile broadband traffic grew by 83 percent in the second half of the year with a CAGR of 234% during 2011.
  • VoIP & IM traffic grew by 114 percent, perhaps substantiating recent reports on SMS and international voice calls decline.
  • Video Streaming traffic continues to dominate mobile broadband, with a share of 42 percent of total bandwidth.
  • Android (News - Alert) Market traffic grew by a phenomenal 232 percent, almost four times faster than the Apple App Store, increasing its momentum to become a true Apple App Store rival.
  • YouTube (News - Alert) now accounts for 24 percent of the total broadband traffic; 14 percent of total YouTube traffic is high-definition.
  • Whats App now accounts for 18 percent of the IM total bandwidth, a dramatic increase in popularity from only 3 percent in H1, 2011.
  • Facebook (News - Alert) messenger is an all-time 'killer app' on mobile; rising from zero to 22 percent of total IM traffic in just four months.
