Mobile Device Security Management Trumping Mobile Device Management
February 21, 2012

As Mobile Device Management (MDM) was once seen as the best way to protect a device, lately enterprises in the private and government sectors have found it is not that effective. At the RSA (News - Alert) Conference held later this month, MDM products will be tossed aside for the new comprehensive Mobile Device Security Management (MDSM) suites. MDSM’s are a newer type of security technology that are also know, as “disrupters” -- technologies that are ahead of the curve in providing solutions to mobile problems that many companies have not anticipated or experienced.

In this world of evolving mobile technology, it is important to think ahead especially in regards to security. With different industries needing different security measures for employee devices, MDSM’s are creating an opportunity for customizable security based on industry needs.

Mobile threats are increasing, as cybercriminals are finding more ways to bypass security and enable evolving malware like never before. Whether the attacks come through applications or social platforms, the attackers have diversified their skills and are now able to use both complex and simple methods to gain access to cellular devices. Although all devices are at risk, Android (News - Alert) platforms have seen a majority of this activity. In 2011 alone, malware targeting of this platform’s devices jumped 3,325 percent. And while Apple iOS has seen limited attacks due to the closed nature of the platform, security researchers have been successful in uploading unapproved applications on the Apple (News - Alert) App Store, making both major carrier devices in the U.S. susceptible to possible security breaches. These newest developments will surely encourage those in the government, business and medical industries to switch to MDSM to protect sensitive information and their employee’s cellular devices.

If you are interested in learning more about leading security trends, the RSA Conference is addressing this issue in its 2012 Analyst Teleconference. The teleconference will feature research and commentary from representatives of some of the top mobile security organizations in the world.
