Mobile Visual Search Will Replace QR Codes, According to bieMEDIA

The QR Code is set to come to an end according to reports from bieMEDIA, an online marketing, and media solutions company. The company said that the widely used “Quick Response” Code will soon be replaced by mobile visual search, which will enable customers to have a marketing experience that is easy, interactive and satisfying.

In a release, bieMEDIA CEO Jon Barocas said that, “QR Codes were introduced as a quick extension to modernize the bar code. The issue is that these 'squares' take up valuable real estate on a business' marketing collateral or even act as an eye sore to the storefront. With our investment in Mobile Acuity (News - Alert), we're able to get straight to the point - just point at the product, shoot a picture and you'll receive all the information you're looking for and even be able to buy the product on the spot. Coupled with bieMEDIA's extensive video experience, we're now able to offer a new, more interactive and engaging experience.”

Confident about the extensive advantages presented by mobile visual search, bieMEDIA has made heavy investments in Mobile Acuity, a Scottish technology company that has been delivering mobile visual search applications over its Visual Interactivity platform used by retailers and in interactive campaigns.

Tesco, working in partnership with Mobile Acuity, will also be furthering mobile visual search applications across in-stores, at point of sales and for customers on-the-go. The new technology will allow customers to simply point their mobile device camera at a product which will then be automatically added to their basket or to look up more information on the product before making a purchase. The new mobile shopping technology solution is also being supported by a major music retailer which is keen on leveraging the platform to include visual search capabilities for its range of products.
