Latest 3D DOCOMO Raises the Bar for Smartphone Multimedia Performance
January 20, 2012

Looking to provide a good viewing experience outdoors while still extending the battery life on your device? Contradictory as it may seem, it's not as difficult as it sounds for the SH-01D smartphone in Japan which can successfully accomplish this by using Apical's Assertive Display technology.

This handset, one of the latest smartphones in Japan, the docomo series AQUOS PHONE SH-01D by Sharp (News - Alert) and a 4.5" HD (1280 x 720) autostereoscopic 3D touchscreen, is expected to go on sale shortly. The Assertive Display core is integrated into Sharp's proprietary media processor.

"We have been working with Sharp for several years and were very impressed by the way in which Sharp was able rapidly to grasp how to use our unique technology. Sharp has again produced a great product which raises the bar worldwide for smartphone multimedia performance," said Michael Tusch, CEO at Apical, in a press release.

Assertive Display helps to optimize the performance of the handset for multimedia viewing by mimicking the performance of the human eye. Just as the eye adjusts itself in different viewing environments, the sophisticated digital processing also adjusts each pixel in real time as viewing conditions change.

Thus the SH-01D smartphone, according to company officials, handles the 'traditionally considered central but contradictory requirements' of having to provide a good viewing experience outdoors and still reduces display power, rather well.

Apical's Assertive Display takes into account not only the screen brightness but also the amount of light in the environment and optimizes viewability of games, movies and more to give a seamless viewing experience.

In a related release, Apical’s Assertive Display technology has been incorporated in the AQUOS PHONE SoftBank 102SH by Sharp, which is part of the winter release of new SoftBank smartphones in Japan. The smartphone features latest-generation display technology, incorporating a 3D display with HD resolution. The 102SH uses Apical’s Assertive Display technology as part of its advanced power saving and outdoor viewing functions, which are key to optimizing the performance of the handset for multimedia viewing.
