Roam Mobility, a new mobile virtual network operator based in Canada, has just launched a new service that helps Canadians save huge voice and data roaming charges while traveling to the US.
The company has partnered with T-Mobile (News
- Alert) USA to offer the service exclusively to its Canadian customers traveling to the US. With over 18 million Canadians traveling to the US, the service also offers great monetization opportunity for both carriers.
As there are limited such offers, most Canadians resorted to purchasing roaming packages from their existing service providers for a hefty fee, which according to Roam Mobility, results in $450 M being spent in US roaming annually.
“Canadians are tired of paying the highest roaming charges in the world and we're about to change that,” said Emir Aboulhosn, CEO of Roam Mobility, in a statement. “Canadians can now use their phones, smartphones, tablets and laptops in the same way they would at home, the second they enter the US.”
Roam Mobility's US network covers more than 200 million people and leverages HSPA+ 42 technology to offer fast speeds. All Roam's plans are pre-paid and available in increments ranging from one to 30 days. Additionally the company offers unlimited talk and text plans, which include calls and text messages to the US and Canada starting at $2 per day.
Data plans are available in 500 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB and 5 GB increments, with rates as low as two cents per megabyte, the company said in a press release.
By offering significant price reductions of up to 99 percent for Canadians, the communications provider hops to bring more transparency in the roaming segment.
“We are able to offer fair and transparent pricing because we are the first mobile virtual network operator to directly broker a deal with a tier 1 telecom company over an international border,” said Aboulhosn, in a statement. “Canadians have been waiting for a socially-responsible cell phone service like this for a very long time.”
