Holiday Sales of Apple iOS And Android Devices Shot up Globally
December 29, 2011

Localytics, a Boston based software company that provides mobile application publishers real-time analytics and deep insights for iPhone (News - Alert), iPad, Android, Blackberry and WP7 apps, announced that Apple (News - Alert) iOS and Android devices came as the first choice of the gift buyers all over the world over the holiday weekend.

Seen globally, the performance of these two competing platforms was virtually tied, but strong regional differences have been observed across the Americas, Europe and Asia.

A press release revealed that Localytics considered the top 20 markets for mobile devices and reported a huge increase in both Apple iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices over the December 23 - 26 weekend compared to previous weekends since November 25. The US and Germany registered the highest growth rates for iOS while South Korea and Sweden had the highest growth rates for Android.

Localytics reported a total 12.5 times increase in the sale of iOS devices over the weekend. According to the company, the iPhone remained the most popular iOS device, closely followed by the iPad and iPod touch. In the US, Localytics registered 21times more iPods compared to 14 times more iPhones.

When it came to Android devices, Localytic said that Android grew more quickly in 14 of top 20 countries. Android, according to the company experienced the strongest relative growth in South Korea, besting the iOS family by over 80 percent.

Sweden and Japan followed with new Android device growth 45percent to 50 percent ahead of Apple iOS. Apple maintained a lead in new device growth in 6 markets; US, Germany, Great Britain (UK), Italy and Malaysia.

Localytics, a company that provides mobile analytic services to top app publishers across over 200 million devices, maintained that a key metric tracked by publishers is how many new devices, or customers, use their applications. By calculating the number of new devices across its entire publisher base, Localytics can estimate the growth of iPhones, iPads, Android phones and other devices.

Earlier this year, IBM (News - Alert) named Localytics the winner of SmartCamp New York, its global competition for startup companies.
