Still no sign of Bremerton teen who disappeared in October

BREMERTON, Jan 28, 2012 (Kitsap Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Amid the glow of candles and the recital of prayers at Evergreen Park on Wednesday, Ralph Scott pleaded for answers.

His son, 19-year-old Miguel Scott, went missing three months ago from the very park where his friends and family had gathered.

"If he's in hiding, please let us know," Scott told the 40-plus people huddled around picnic benches. "This is a parent's worst nightmare." The mystery of Scott's disappearance is part of the agony. Scott had never run away from home before, according to his mother, Rosemarie Hererra. He was enjoying his schooling and had plans to join the Navy. Rumors that he owed people money have circulated, but have never been substantiated.

Scott's friends said the 19-year-old was in good spirits the day he disappeared; phone records indicate he last talked on his mobile phone at 6:56 p.m. Oct. 27. Friends last saw him at about 10 p.m. that night and he has not logged onto Facebook (which he typically would do daily) since.

But his family and friends refuse to give up hope. A reward for information about Scott's whereabouts has grown to $5,600, thanks in part to the donations from Herrera's fellow employees at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino, some of whom donated unused vacation time as cash for it. A Facebook page "Help Find Miguel Scott," has more than 860 followers.

One person who's been helping Herrera is Cheryl Radabah, a Bremerton woman who knows what it's like to have a missing child. Radabah's daughter, Kara Lynn, 19, went missing in May 2010. Her daughter's remains were found in Illahee State Park that summer.

"Missing person cases are incredibly difficult and painful," Cheryl Radabah said. "Because of what our family went through, I felt I could help." She phoned Kitsap County Sheriff's detectives to get in touch with Rose Herrera.

Radabah said she's learned missing persons cases are each handled differently by the authorities. For instance, males don't typically receive the same attention as females, she said.

"There has been complete silence from this young man," Radabah said. "Something's happened." Kitsap County Sheriff's Detective Phil Doremus says he is investigating leads but so far, "none have panned out." He was successful Friday at registering Scott in a database for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, even though Scott is 19. Scott's parents could not take that step because he is over 18 years old, but law enforcement can enter missing as old as 21 persons into the database, Doremus said.

Scott has also been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and Doremus has distributed bulletins to neighboring law enforcement jurisdictions.
